Geology: Peanut wood is a silicified (petrified) wood, generally of a black colour with numerous borings, which were made by a marine wood-boring bivalve, Teredo. These light coloured areas used to be boreholes in the original wood. Before the wood was petrified, it was washed into the ocean as driftwood, attacked by small marine shellfish called “Teredo” or “shipworm”. They bore a small tunnel into the wood & eventually the entire piece can be riddled with boreholes. The wood would then become waterlogged and sank to the bottom of the ocean settling into the mud. The boreholes filled with the light coloured radiolarian sediment. Some time later, petrification began. The age is Cretaceous... which makes it around 70 million years old.

Geology: PETRIFIED WOOD is the name given to a special type of fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation. It is the result of a tree having turned completely into stone by the process of permineralization. All the organic materials have been replaced with minerals (mostly a silicate, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the wood.
Unlike other types of fossils which are typically impressions or compressions, petrified wood is a three dimensional representation of the original organic material. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen which inhibits aerobic decomposition. Mineral-laden water flowing through the sediment deposits minerals in the plant’s cells and as the plant’s lignin and cellulose decay, a stone mould forms in its place.

When there is no alignment of uniform silica spheres it is still considered Opal (or Opalite) but there is no flash of colour and therefore called common Opal.
